You know "P-town", right? Provincetown, Massachusetts, ground zero for the gay universe. Located on Cape Cod, P-town - to those in the know- is the playground of the LGBT community from every walk of life, and from every corner of the globe. Here you'll find lesbian lovers walking hand-in-hand, strolling in and out of quaint little shops and congregating on the beach in droves. There's no need to sneak a kiss in between the aisles or underneath a beach towel here, because chances are everyone around you is doing the same thing.

Bear Week in Provincetown, July 7-15

Provincetown Bears prepares a special welcome for Bears to one of North America's most famous gay resort towns. We work with local club managers to program different music and an atmosphere for a week of parties. They also allow time to relax and have a true vacation. Bear events leave plenty of free time to enjoy the town, restaurants, cabaret shows, National Seashore park, beaches, and the daily gatherings at hotel pool decks.

All Provincetown bars and clubs are 21+ (strictly enforced), including the two hotel pools used for Bear Week. Public meeting places such as the active street scene, Town Hall benches, Spiritus Pizza and beaches are available for younger cubs to enjoy. Bars, clubs and restaurants are all smoke-free areas in Massachusetts; provisions are often available for smoking outdoors.

Traditional highlights of Provincetown in summer include the daily T-Dance and nightly 1 am pizza and cruising at Spiritus. The hotels, pools and clubs are mostly within a short walk, and Commercial Street becomes one of the primary venues as a place to see and meet friends.

Miss Richfield 1981: "We’ll All Be Dead By Christmas"

People’s nerves were jangling as I entered the Paramount Nightclub at the Crown & Anchor to see Miss Richfield 1981’s latest show, We’ll All be Dead By Christmas. The ticket-takers warned, “it doesn’t matter where you sit, she pulls people from all over.” There were groans from nervous first-timers, but it was clear that the groaning was more of a cover-up for the glee they felt inside at the prospect of being part of the show.


Miss Richfield 1981 (played by Russ King) has created a show on the theme of the apocalypse predicted by the Mayan calendar (which says life on earth will cease this December 21st), or as she explains it, “the world is going to end and the Mexicans are involved.”


She begins the show dressed as a cactus, delighting the audience with her attempts to move gracefully while potted around the ankles. True to form, her show integrates whatever unpredictable elements exist in the night’s particular audience. Interestingly, just after she spent ten minutes discussing “the Mexicans” in politically incorrect terms, she found several real Mexicans in our audience on the night I attended. But that didn’t stop her from her hysterically funny Don Rickles-esque assault on various ethnic and other groups. No – We’ll All be Dead By Christmas is not for the socio-politically squeamish.

Dina Martina reaches deep into the vault of obscurity with her latest show, a mélange of 1970s AM radio gold standards, the patter of a demented variety show, and the costuming of a fashion show where the plus sized model  with a hairy back got dressed during a tornado. In short, Dina is at the top of her game with her latest stage show incarnation as the triple threat tap dances to the soundtrack of a nervous breakdown.

The strength of any Dina Martina show is the writing. Smart, sublime, and full of deep references, Dina’s performances are multilayered and multifaceted, leaving audiences to laugh at the absurdity of her nagging camel toe and giant bra strap with rusty hooks, or giggle at her clever commentary about religion, politics, and popular culture.  

The demented darling is nearing a decade of performing in Provincetown and in that, Dina Martina has positioned herself as one of the most compelling and riotous acts in the town’s storied performance history. Fearless, edgy, and well-crafted, Dina Martina is an annual must-see of the summer shows in Ptown. It’s the combinations of sincerity and obliviousness, delusion and charm, and high camp and high anxiety that assemble the components of the completely realized character of Dina Martina that enable each show to get away with the illusion of watching someone act as it they have no real talent. But despite the warbled songs and missed dance steps, the implicit humor embedded in the irony that indeed you just might be watching a genius in action gives each show a jolt of striking energy.

If you’re looking for a little day trip or a weekend getaway, explore “the other Cape,” which is just a 30 mile drive north of Boston. Founded by the pilgrims in 1623, this beautiful stretch of coastline along Massachusetts includes four communities – Gloucester, Essex, Rockport and Manchester-by-the-Sea. Film buffs might recognize the area because the “Perfect Storm” was filmed here. Cape Ann boasts America’s oldest seaport and art colony.
