Art's Dune Tours

Imagine dunes stretching as far as you can see with wispy beach grass, dark green pine trees and deep red beach plums nestled in hollows which are brought together by a silhouette of blue sky. You will travel through the majestic dunes where your guide points out the "dune shacks" where famous artists and writers like Eugene O'Neill and Harry Kemp became inspired to create their art.

You will also pass the remains of the Peaked Hill Life Saving Station and learn how the brave "life savers" enacted their heroic efforts to save the lives of thousands from the doomed shipwrecks!  It is such a beautiful tour.  You will be amazed!

Appearances- Green Arts Festival, April 20-29

Appearances: April 20-29

Appearances- Provincetown's 2nd Annual Green Arts Festival- will take place between April 20th and 29th.
 
"Appearances" is a "Green Arts Festival", bringing awareness to our community and visitors of the majesty and fragility of our environment, as well as showing the strengths of the naturally occurring energies that can be harnessed - such as wind, sun and water - by creating kinetic artworks, recyclable artworks and works that will be transformed by the elements during the duration of the event, as well as ecocentric works from other artistic disciplines such as painting, photography, poetry, readings, short films and performance art exhibited or performed at sites throughout Provincetown.

Outdoor sculpture/installation submissions are strongly encouraged and will be displayed on Provincetown Conservation Trust sites and other settings.


The 2012 awards are: 

A roundtrip airfare and accommodations for the top international entry.

A two-week 2012 solo gallery show or reading in Provincetown or NYC (Tribeca) for the top unrepresented artists in various categories (painting, photography, 3-D, literature, etc.).

Provincetown's Poets WAX about Love

YOUNG LOVE

At his incipient sun

The ice of twenty winters broke,
Crackling, in her eyes.

Her mirroring, still mind,
That held the world (made double) calm,
Went fluid, and it ran.

There was a stir of music,
Mixed with flowers, in her blood;
A swift impulsive balm

From obscure roots;
Gold bees of clinging light
Swarmed in her brow.

She is a tree in spring
Trembling with the hope of leaves,
Of which the leaves are tongues.

Her throat is full of songs,
She hums, she is sensible of wings
Growing on her heart.

Mid-October Sunset Dune Tour

No visit to Provincetown is complete without a dune tour. I’ve been a Provincetown resident for a while now, but I’ve never been on one...until yesterday. And what a treat that was! We booked a sunset trip and we were lucky to have great weather and clear skies.


Abby and Paul, who have been living in Provincetown “for ever” as they said, were our drivers. Their knowledge on the history, geography, and pretty much every aspect involving the dunes, never ceased to amaze me.


En route we learned interesting facts about some of the famous dune shacks, symbols of sought solitude and romantic or creative getaways, picked delicious wild cranberries from a bog and witnessed an epic sunset.


The serene scenery is breathtaking and it seems to be untouched by the years that have gone by. Unsurprisingly, the decor consisting of wild vegetation, sand dunes, divine light and archaic dune shacks built with driftwood from the “graveyard” of the Atlantic ocean, which Peaked Hill used to be, was a motor of inspiration for great artists such as Harry Kemp and Eugene O’Neill.

Art’s Dune Tours have been in business since 1946, ever since Art Costa, “The King of the Dunes” started his beach taxi business. Now, over 60 years later, Rob Costa, his son, is managing the family business.


Art’s run daily dune tours mid-May through mid-November, Race Point Lighthouse tours, and private charters for special events. Clambakes, where passengers can choose from a variety of menu items, are available on request.
