Right whales return to Provincetown for rare December frolic

Right Whales were seen breaching in Cape Cod Bay

The right whales have returned in time for the holidays this year, creating such a spectacle in Provincetown Harbor last week that even Dr. Charles “Stormy” Mayo, researcher of right whales for 30 years, was impressed.

Mayo dashed off to the residence of an old friend, Dick Burhoe, on Beach Point last Thursday after Burhoe reported seeing right whales breaching offshore. The scientist arrived in time to witness a scene worthy of “Animal Planet”: a sort of unwieldy whale ballet being performed about a third of a mile out, as a pair of the rare cetaceans leaped repeatedly from the water.

“I’ve never seen two right whales jumping simultaneously,” Mayo said. “It’s extremely dramatic when you see an extremely rare animal doing such extremely rare behavior. … These two animals were breaching regularly, more than I have ever seen. I probably saw as many as 20 or 30 breaches and maybe more.”

Between jumps, he said, the whales engaged in some overtly flirtatious behavior, rolling at the surface and zigzagging. Frisky groups of right whales are referred to as SAGs, for “sexually active groups” or “surface active groups.”

As far as the right whales’ reproductive calendar goes, December is the most fruitful month, a time when fertilization tends to be successful, Mayo said. So it’s possible that one of the baby right whales born next year will have been conceived in Provincetown.

Same-sex duo dances for a cause in Provincetown

By Terrence Doyle
Posted Dec 13, 2011 @ 06:44 AM

Looking for something to do Thursday, Dec. 15, from 8 p.m. onward? Well, look no further.

Same-sex ballroom dance champions Kalin Mitov and Michael Winward will be performing and delivering a short instructional class on ballroom dancing in the Gifford House’s basement venue, Club Purgatory. The event is a fundraiser in support of the “It Gets Better Project,” which helps teens in the LGBT world deal with bullying and combat depression and thoughts of suicide. There will be no cover at the door, though Mitov says a donation will be suggested. There will also be a raffle.

“We've gotten local businesses to donate things like clothing and gift certificates as prizes,” says Mitov. Mitov and Winward are the current holders of both the U.S. and the North American same-sex ballroom dance titles, as awarded by the North American Same Sex Partner Dance Association.

According to the NASSPDA’s mission, the body is “a membership organization committed to the promotion and expansion of social and competitive same-sex partner dancing, which includes Ballroom, Latin, Swing, Country Western and other partner dances, as well as different styles within those terms, such as International and American Style. NASSPDA acknowledges and celebrates its origins in the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender community.” Read more: Same-sex duo dances for a cause in Provincetown.

Notes from Land's End: December 6

Awesome gifts for $20 or less in Provincetown
December 6th, 2011

Being on a budget this holiday season will be easy if you do your gift shopping right here in Provincetown. This roving Christmas elf went out during the Holly Folly Shop Hop and found awesome presents for under a sawbuck.

Joe & Chris @ 141 Market

Bradford Natural Market has hundreds of gift-worthy products for the gluten-free, organically inclined or health conscious on your list. The Green & Black Organic Chocolate Classic Collection is just $13.00 and Bloomin’ Flower Cards and Tags ($3.50 to $7.50) are a garden patch message for spring. Owners Joe and Chris are great holiday hosts, with a daily hot lunch that is sublimely good for you ($8.99/pound) by FarmMaid’s 141 Kitchen.

Scott Cunningham and his delicious "Scottcakes"

Next stop was to mail off some sensationally sugary “Scottcakes”, now available to ship for the Xmas Season. The iconic pink-frosted butter-cream cupcake became all the rage when actor Scott Cunningham was brought to court for selling these morsels on Commercial Street in 2010. Now, with his own location across from the Provincetown library, Scottcakes will send out a half dozen for $15.00 (plus shipping) with frosting instructions available on YouTube. Check this out: The ScottSwirl! Call 508-487-PINK to order.

Happy as a Ptown Clam

I never thought I'd enjoy scratching for clams, but...well, I was wrong. I am in Cape Cod after all, and, when in Rome...

Nancyann

Scratching for clams
Halfway there

Clamming is just one of the many winter activities in Provincetown if you're not too busy attending popular social events, catching up on your reading or lighting a bonfire on the beach.

John and Nancyann
Low tide at Breakwater

Whether you're a visitor or a Provincetown resident you can easily acquire a shellfish license at Town Clerk's Office, which is good for the entire season (November through March that is).

Low tide at Breakwater

A good friend of mine gave me some Clamming 101 lessons and I was ready to go. She was also kind enough to lend me the gear: a bucket, a rake with long prongs, rubber boots and advice on where "hotspots" might be.

Sunshine over the Moors

This year clamming takes place near the Breakwater, right at the very West end of Commercial Street, and it is only allowed on Fridays and Sundays (for obvious reasons given the popularity of this activity) when tides are low.

Beautiful day for clamming

"Why should I acquire a license and go clamming?" you may ask. Here are just a few good reasons: it is fun, you're spending time outdoors exercising (trust me, clamming is a good workout), you get to eat fresh clams for dinner, you get to see some of your friends who you haven't seen in months, and last but not least, the scenery is gorgeous. And I have pictures to prove it...

John and Nancyann

Two hours and a bucketful later I had met my daily quota and I was happy as a Ptown clam.

December 1 - World Aids Day

The Swim for Life & Paddler Flotilla is being honored at the State House in Boston on December 1st, World AIDS Day, in Nurses Hall.

In honor of the 25th anniversary of the Swim next year, Jay Critchley will speak and the Prayer Ribbons will be displayed from 11:00am to 3:00pm. These five-foot long colored ribbons have been collected over 15 years and are inscribed with names and messages of people we wish to honor in our lives, both living and deceased.

The event is being organized with Rep. Sarah Peake, the Mass Department of Public Health and other legislators. Donna Roll's students from Longy School of Music will sing musical selections. HIV/AIDS organizations from across the state have been invited, and the event is open to the public.

The Prayer Ribbons bear witness to the annual Swim for Life, a quintessential Provincetown event.  They are on view in the Meeting House, on Commercial Street and on the Boatslip deck during the event.
